I know you want to say I’m kidding, they are flag stamps, of course, they got a flag on the stamp!

Let’s get to know some basic facts about the U.S. flag.

On January 1, 1776, the Continental Army hoisted a flag over the base at Prospect Hill when they laid siege to British-controlled Boston. The grand union flag, with 13 alternate red and white stripes and the British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner, became the first known flag representing a new country.

The Continental Congress passed an act for establishing an official flag for the United States on June 14, 1777. “Resolved, that the flag of the United States is thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union is thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

And that was a fresh beginning for the U.S. flag. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman also officially declared June 14 as Flag Day.

The U.S. flag involves 13 horizontal strips of red alternating with white. In the upper left, there is a blue rectangle in the canton with 50 small, white five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows.

Fifty stars on the flag represent the 50 American states, while the 13 stripes represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states in America after declaring independence from Great Britain.

The colors used in the design are – White, Old Glory Blue, and Old Glory Red. About the meaning behind the colors of the American flag, it is said that Old Glory Red symbolizes hardiness and valor. It is like the red blood shed by those who have fought to protect their freedom and country. White represents purity and innocence, which means America holds to its ideals. Old Glory Blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Nowadays we can see the U.S. flag displayed everywhere: inside the house, it may be used as a decoration. However, before the Civil War, the flag was rarely seen except for government buildings or ships and military forts. The army wasn’t allowed to carry the American flag into battle even during the American War of Independence and War of 1812.

It was not until 1861 that the American flag was allowed to leave with the Union troops after the shots at Forts Sumter. The flag has been carried across northern cities, which spurred the so-called “ Flagmania” wave. Consistently, the sales of flags increased incredibly.

The flag is not just a piece of fabric with some printed colorful patterns, it is the symbol of a country, a sign of pride and patriotism. From the design of the U.S Flag, we can read the history and value of the United States – Freedom and Bravery. I think that is why U.S Flag Stamps are so popular and enduring among people.
